It's the question that comes up most: is an anonymous SMS impossible to trace back? The honest answer is no — and that's precisely what makes the service defensible.

Anonymous to the recipient

What an anonymous SMS hides is your number from the recipient. The message is sent from a shared gateway: the person only sees a service number, never your personal line. No account is created, and only the data needed for routing is processed.

Not untraceable, though

To prevent abuse, sends are logged (IP address included) and can be shared with the authorities under a court order. Harassment, threats and identity theft remain offences, and are entirely traceable. Anonymity is a right to discretion, not a licence to act illegally.

Why that's a good thing

Truly absolute anonymity would be a magnet for abuse, and both search engines and hosting providers downgrade this kind of service. By accepting traceability for illegal uses while protecting the privacy of legitimate ones, the service stays useful — and reputable.

What about the message content?

The SMS is not end-to-end encrypted. For a conversation whose content you want to protect, an encrypted messaging app is a better fit. The anonymous SMS, for its part, excels at a one-off message, hidden and account-free.
