In brief

An OTP code (One-Time Password) is a single-use, short-lived code, sent by SMS to validate a login or a payment.

To go deeper

The OTP is a code usable only once and for barely a few minutes. Carried by SMS, it stands as the most widespread second authentication factor, since it requires no installation on the recipient's side.

Its ubiquity must not obscure its flaws: the SMS isn't end-to-end encrypted and remains vulnerable to SIM-card hijacking as well as phishing. An OTP code is shared with no one, not even a supposed adviser.
