Because your number is never passed on, the recipient cannot write to you directly. If they reply to the number shown on their phone, the reply reaches the gateway and joins the public list of received messages, which anyone can read.
To find it, open the received-SMS page and filter by your recipient's number: only their conversation is shown. A recent reply may take a moment to appear.
This reply is public. If you want a private exchange, add a reply channel you are happy to share — a dedicated email address, a messaging handle — and warn your recipient that anything they write to the number shown will be visible.
