RCS

RCS grafts onto the phone's native messaging the familiar functions of chat apps: read confirmation, a "typing" indicator, sharing of large files and enriched group conversations.

Unlike the SMS, it requires a data connection and compatibility on both sides: the phone, the messaging app and the operator must all follow suit. As soon as one link is missing, the exchange falls back to SMS on its own, proof that the latter remains the universal common denominator.
