In brief

An MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) is an operator that sells plans without owning any masts, by renting the network of an infrastructure operator.

To go deeper

A virtual operator runs its offers, its billing and its customer service, but leans on the masts of a network operator. In France, MVNOs borrow the coverage of Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom or Free Mobile.

On the user side, the gap is mainly commercial: the numbers remain the usual 06 and 07, the coverage is that of the host network, and sending as well as receiving SMS proceeds identically.
